Conference USA Player of the Year Courtney Taylor scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as second-seeded Houston survived a scare from No. 10 seed UTEP to hang on for a 57-55 win in day two of the 2010 GMC Sierra C-USA Women's Basketball Championship Tuesday evening at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

W. Basketball. UAB Advances With 64-55 Upset Victory over SMU
Amber Jones scored a game-high 23 points and dished out four assists off the bench as sixth-seeded UAB upset No. 3 seed SMU, 64-55, in day two of the 2010 GMC Sierra Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.Jones connected on 8-of-15 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers and helped the Blazer reserves outscore their Mustang counterparts, 41-7. UAB hit just 25.7 percent of its shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but bounced back after halftime to hit 13-of-25 baskets (.520) in the second half.

Green Wave guard Chassity Brown hit a layup with 6.6 remaining as top-seeded Tulane came from behind to defeat defending tournament champion and eighth-seeded UCF, 63-62, to open day two of the 2010 GMC Sierra Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship Tuesday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Baseball. Houston's Goodnight Named National Pitcher of the Week
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)¬ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 7, today. Georgia State junior outfielder Mark Micowski was named National Hitter of the Week, while Houston sophomore right-handed pitcher Michael Goodnight was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

M. Basketball. C-USA Men's Basketball Specialty Awards Announced
After becoming the only freshman to earn all-conference honors this season, Marshall forward Hassan Whiteside was named the 2010 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year. Whiteside's teammate, Dago Pena, shared C-USA Sixth Player of the Year honors with Tulsa sophomore Steven Idlet. Memphis sophomore guard Elliot Williams was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year. All awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and select media.

The Blazer duo of Tamika Dukes and Amanda Peterson combined to score 21 of their 30 points in the second half as sixth-seeded UAB rallied to defeat No. 11 seed and host Tulsa, 52-45, in game three of the 2010 GMC Sierra Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship Monday evening at the Donald. W. Reynolds Center.

Softball. March 8 C-USA Softball Notebook
Tulsa's Lauren Lindsay earned the Softball Hitter of the Week honor, while Carly Hummel of Memphis was named the Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office Monday. Lindsay batted .563 and recorded eight RBI with seven extra base hits for the Golden Hurricane last week. In three outings, Hummel picked up three wins, while striking out 22 in 16.2 innings of work.

It's California week in Conference USA. Three C-USA schools head out west for games in the Golden State, while Cal-Berkeley visits Rice for a four-game set. East Carolina will play a single game at Cal State Northridge before facing Pepperdine for a three-game set. Red-hot Houston begins a nine-game road trip with a series at Cal Poly this weekend. UAB will participate in the SDSU Invitational with games against San Diego, San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton.

Knights' guard Chelsie Wiley scored a team-best 19 points as eighth-seeded UCF defeated No. 9 seed Marshall, 59-57 in overtime, in the opening game of the 2010 GMC Sierra Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

M. Basketball. March 8 Men's Basketball Weekly Awards
Marshall senior forward Tyler Wilkerson was named C-USA Player of the Week and Tulane freshman Jordan Callahan was selected as the C-USA Rookie of the Week by a media panel representing each conference member for games through March 7. Wilkerson posted back-to-back double-doubles for the Thundering Herd. Callahan had a career night with 21 points and five rebounds to lead the Green Wave to a win over Houston Saturday.

W. Basketball. Conference USA Announces Women's Basketball Player and Coach of the Year
Houston junior forward Courtney Taylor and Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton both held their teams together during some rocky moments this season and both were honored Monday as the Conference USA Player and Coach of the year, respectively, as voted upon by the league's head coaches, women's basketball media relations contact and a media member from each market.

M. Basketball. C-USA Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams Announced
Players from five different schools are represented on the 2010 All-Conference USA men's basketball first-team, featuring three repeat all-conference selections and two newcomers. Seniors Aubrey Coleman of Houston and Ben Uzoh of Tulsa are joined by juniors Elijah Millsap of UAB and Randy Culpepper of UTEP, along with sophomore Elliot Williams of Memphis. All five players are guards. Voting on the awards was done by the C-USA head coaches and media members in each conference city.
